Druid Hills Saves Its October for After Dark

October 8, 2026

Almost every October event from Druid Hills' four main cultural groups starts after 6 p.m. and lands in one of three short stretches. Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, the Emory Village Fall Festival and the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance have almost nothing on the calendar for a weekday afternoon. Their programs fill a handful of Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and two of them land on the same night within the first week. With this many evening events this close together, the main things to plan are which night you pick and where you park.

The table shows three clusters: October 8 to 10, October 22 to 24 and October 29 to 30. Between them are long gaps with little on the schedule. Within each cluster, events often overlap.

The First Friday Holds Two Events at Once

The closest overlap is Friday, October 9. Fernbank After Dark runs from 7 to 11 p.m. with the theme "Nature's Nightmares." It is a 21-and-over evening with music, bars, small plates, science demonstrations, giant-screen films and time in WildWoods after dark. Fernbank's ticket page lists $23.95 for nonmembers and $18.95 for members. Members should sign in before checkout, because the event portal shows the same $23.95 for both until the discount is applied.

That same night, Callanwolde holds its next-to-last Jazz on the Lawn concert of the 2026 season, Joe Gransden's Big Band with Maria Howell. Check-in opens at 6:30 p.m. and the music runs from 7:30 to 9:30. Ticket prices on Eventbrite start at $38.43. General admission is lawn seating, and guests can bring blankets, low-profile chairs, food and drinks. Beer, wine, water and soft drinks are also for sale on site.

Since the two events cover nearly the same hours, most people will pick one. If you choose the concert, plan your parking before you leave. Callanwolde's on-site Orange Lot is for VIP ticket holders, people with prepaid parking passes and guests with disability parking permits. Everyone else parks in Metro City Church's Blue Lot at 999 Briarcliff Road NE, a 0.3-mile walk from the lawn. General admission guests who want an Orange Lot pass have to buy it ahead of time. Fernbank calls its event parking free but limited and recommends rideshare for evening events.

The night before, Thursday, October 8, Callanwolde opens the Southeastern Photographic Society's 50th Anniversary Members Show from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public through November 19. That reception is the easiest of the three evenings this week. You don't need a ticket or a lawn spot.

The Elephants Arrive the Next Morning

Saturday, October 10 is the one daytime event in the first cluster, and it's the one that lasts longest. The Secret World of Elephants opens at Fernbank and runs through January 3, 2027. The American Museum of Natural History in New York organized the exhibition. It includes life-size elephant models, interactive trunk and vibration demonstrations, a woolly mammoth model and tooth casts visitors can touch, along with sections on elephant behavior, ecology and conservation. There are no live animals.

Fernbank includes the exhibition in daytime general admission and doesn't list a separate charge. Weekend online tickets are $27.95 for adults, $26.95 for seniors 65 and older and $25.95 for children ages 3 to 12. Members get in free, as do children 2 and under when they come with an adult. On opening morning, the Elephant Extravaganza runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with family crafts, elephant trivia, a memory challenge and a build-your-own-savanna activity, all included with admission. Fernbank expects a crowd. Its event page says parking is limited and may not be available, and it suggests parking off-site and walking or using rideshare. The exhibition stays open for twelve more weeks after opening day, so if parking is the concern, a quieter weekday visit later in the fall gets you the same elephants.

The new exhibition is part of a larger update at Fernbank. The museum is opening new galleries in phases under a $27 million campaign. Our Place in the Cosmos opened in November 2025 and the Orkin Discovery Zone in May 2026. Changing Earth and the new Margaret H. Rollins gallery are expected in 2027, along with more automatic doors and a second passenger elevator.

Late October Packs Three Days Into One Weekend

The second cluster puts four events into three days. On Thursday, October 22, Callanwolde opens its Fall Ceramics Show with a free reception from 6 to 9 p.m. The show features work by James Delevett, Chad Dittmer, Abbey Hull, Kate Pak, Doug Tobin, Ginger Vento, Ceramics Program Director John Roberts and Callanwolde's instructors. It is open through October 25, with gallery hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

On Friday, October 23, Pete Ayres closes the Jazz on the Lawn season. The Eventbrite listing gives two different start times, 7:30 p.m. on the main schedule and 7 p.m. in its agenda section. Check-in opens at 6:30 either way. The Blue Lot and Orange Lot rules from October 9 apply again.

On Saturday, October 24, you can do both of the day's events back to back. The ceramics artist talks at Callanwolde run from 2 to 3 p.m. The Emory Village Fall Festival starts an hour later. The Druid Hills Civic Association and the Emory Village Alliance host it on the large field at 1605 N. Decatur Road. The schedule:

  • 4 p.m.: Trunk or Treat, games, music and activities
  • 5 p.m.: Kids' costume parade through the village
  • 5:30 p.m.: Costume contest
  • 6:30 p.m.: Mark Warren on keytar
  • 7 p.m.: The Nightmare Before Christmas, followed by Shaun of the Dead at 8:30

The festival is for all ages, and the organizers ask people to bring blankets, lawn chairs and Halloween costumes. It runs from mid-afternoon past 10 p.m., so it's the longest single event of the month.

The Last Week Has Three Costume Nights

The costumes from the Fall Festival come back twice more before Halloween. On Thursday, October 29, the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance holds its Party for the Park on Ponce Fall Soirée at Callanwolde from 6 to 9 p.m. The evening includes seasonal cocktails and bites and live music. Costumes are encouraged this year but optional, and evening attire is equally welcome. Ticket sales support the park.

The next night, Friday, October 30, Fernbank holds Fright Night from 7 to 11 p.m. for guests 21 and over. It has a live DJ, special performers, costume prizes, cocktails, beer, small plates and access to The Secret World of Elephants. The ticket portal shows $23.95 for both members and nonmembers. Taxes and processing fees are extra, and tickets are nonrefundable.

Counting the Fall Festival, there are three costume events in seven days, at three different venues. The soirée crowd is park supporters, Fright Night is adults only and the festival is for families, so each night draws different guests.

What's Closing, and What's New on Ponce

One Fernbank exhibit closes on a firm date. WildWoods: Flora, Fauna & Flight, ends November 1. The outdoor exhibit along the WildWoods walkways has sculptures of the region's native birds, bees, dragonflies, butterflies, dandelions, cattails, bats and more, along with larger-than-life photo ops featuring butterflies and bats and displays on flight, gliding and adaptation. You can see it two ways before then. Fernbank After Dark on October 9 includes WildWoods after dark, and general admission on any day covers it in daylight.

Something newer and permanent is on Ponce de Leon Avenue. New gateway signs now mark the eastern and western entrances to Historic Druid Hills along Ponce, greeting people coming in westward at Deepdene and eastward along Springdale. They are a permanent gift from the Olmsted 200 Committee, designed by Tunnell & Tunnell Landscape Architecture to match the character of Olmsted Linear Park. The Olmsted Linear Park Alliance announced them in August. A walk past the Deepdene sign before the October 29 soirée leads into the park the evening's ticket sales support.
